I love finding engaging ways to make learning fun and practice basic skills. I also love an activity that gets kids up and moving while learning and this Write the Room Beginning Sounds activity is sure to do just that.

Setting Up Write The Room Beginning Sounds
This freebie comes with two different recording sheets and two different sets of cards so that it can be differentiated and used with both preschool and kindergarten aged children.
The prep for this free activity is simple. First, print out the set of cards and recording sheets that you would like to use for your group of students.
I like to print the cards on cardstock for durability and then laminate them for continued use. Cut them apart and then hang the cards around the room.
Print off the recording sheet and attach it to a clipboard. A clipboard will hold their paper in place and give them something hard to write on as they move around the room.

INK SAVING TIP: If you would like to use a recording sheet, you can print these out and give one to each child or slide them in a dry erase pocket and give them a dry erase marker to complete. This will cut down on copies and make the recording sheet reusable.
Time to Write the Room
Students will walk around the room looking for beginning sound cards. When they find a card, they will identify the beginning sound and write or trace the letter that each word begins with next to the picture on the recording sheet.
Students will continue until they have completed the recording sheet. There is one picture card for each letter sound.
The recording sheet for each level (writing and tracing) is two pages. You can print these double sided to save on paper.
- Use the cards and letter manipulatives to identify the beginning sounds and mark each card with a letter.
- Print the two different sets of cards on cardstock and use them as a beginning sounds matching game.
