Letter R Craft – R is for Rainbow

While we had already done this fun R is for Roses letter r craft, I realized I hadn’t covered lower case r’s with my kids – so of course, we had to do R is for Rainbow right away!

This letter r craft is a fun alphabet activity for preschoolers or kindergarteners who are learning their letters! It makes a great hands-on letter craft.

Now this craft could easily be used for both upper and lowercase “R” if you’d prefer to just do one set of crafts to cover both options, but my kids are loving the daily ritual of making our kindergarten letter crafts, so we don’t mind repeating letters and doing separate crafts for lower and uppercase.

This craft – like our roll a rainbow slime activity – is a great way to subtly reinforce the order of the color of the rainbow in a fun, hands-on way that engages kids.

Making the Letter R Craft – R is for Rainbow

First, gather your materials:

Using the scissors, cut the cardstock in half, and with half of the sheets cut out a “r” outline (like a window). Cut the construction paper into strips.

Provide the children with one strip in each rainbow color and a solid (no “r” outline) piece of white cardstock.

Encourage the children to first arrange the strips of colored paper on their cardstock in the order of the rainbow. This will allow them to correct their order before they start gluing.

Next, have them start gluing the strips of paper onto the cardstock. There will likely be some uneven lines or some colors mixed up – I personally choose not to correct this since there was a subtle reminder (my example rainbow) on the table.

(In general, I don’t like to hover or dictate how a craft should look. The children always know the intention and they have the freedom to stray from that.)

After the kids are done attaching their rainbow strips of paper, have them glue the “r” window cut-out overtop and smooth it down.

After the rainbow windows were done drying, I trimmed the edges to make them look a bit cleaner.

Our r is for rainbow Letter R Crafts turned out so beautiful and were a great way to reinforce the order of the colors of the rainbow with kids.

This method of making “peekaboo windows” in our crafts will definitely be something we do again.
