Learning about penguins with my students is always so much fun! My kids love all penguin-themed activities but often think of penguins as all looking the same, so it can be such fun to really dive in and learn more about them. Before we learn how penguins are different though, we start out with how they are similar. One way we do that is by learning the parts of a penguin and their traits with this free Penguin Labeling Printable!

Learning about penguins? This free Parts of a Penguin Labeling Printable is a great activity to add to your penguin unit!

Penguin Labeling Printable

This labeling printable helps young kids learn some of the basic vocabulary and parts of a penguin. It’s also a great introduction to the skill of labeling!

Depending on the age of your students and their capabilities, you may choose to do this activity in a small group, whole class, or independently.

Time to Label!

We started this activity by reviewing the words in the word bank. This printable is great for younger children as it isn’t overwhelming, with only 5 words to choose from.

As most of my kids are non-readers, for these types of vocabulary words, I wrote them on sentence strips and we added them to our pocket chart as we reviewed them.

You could also put this printable under a document camera if you have one, and demonstrate how to complete it so that the class can see a larger example.

Next, we began to label our penguins! I let my students pick their favorite writing tools, like crayons or skinny markers, to add an extra level of fun.

Using our best handwriting, we wrote down the parts of the penguin in the corresponding boxes, until we had labeled the entire penguin.

When we had finished we had labeled the penguin’s eye, beak, stomach, webbed foot, tail, and flipper.

These are words that kids may be familiar with, however, some, like webbed or flipper, are unique enough and high interest enough to pique children’s curiosity and make them want to learn even more about penguins.

We labeled the penguin's eye, beak, stomach, webbed foot, tail, and flipper.

After all of our hard work writing, the kids got to color their penguins. They loved this part!
