Beginning Sound Puzzles

When practicing the alphabet, we work hard on learning both the names of letters and the sounds they make as well. These free Beginning Sound Puzzles are an engaging activity to add to your literacy centers or small groups. They’re a hands-on way to make learning letter sounds fun!

Beginning Sound Puzzles

These puzzles are super simple to prepare. Simply print, laminate, and cut apart on the solid lines and you are ready to go!

I typically introduce puzzles and games in a small group first, and then when my kids understand how the activity works, I add it into our literacy time choices for independent practice.

You may want to print multiple copies of the puzzles, depending on if you are using them at home or in the classroom.

How to Play

One thing I love to do is have my small group begin by putting the letter cards in alphabetical order. This is great practice for reviewing the ABCs!

We spread them out on the table or floor from Aa-Zz, and then place the picture cards in a stacked pile or small basket.

Then, when we grab a picture card, we work together to find its match. When we picked up a hamburger we said, “hamburger, /h/, /h/, hamburger” to focus on the beginning sound.

Once we decided that would be an h, we used our alphabetical order skills to find h in our row (sometimes we point and sing the ABCs to help us along!). We kept playing until all of the cards had been matched up.

Teacher Tip: Make these beginning sound puzzles self-correcting by printing on cardstock (so they aren’t see-through) and writing the correct letter on the back of each picture. Then kids can complete the puzzles independently and check their work!
