Mastering letters and letter sounds is no easy task! We work hard not only on the sounds letters make on their own, but the sounds they can make when they blend together as well. This treasure chest beginning blends match is the perfect activity for any pirate fan, treasure seeker, or just your average Kindergartener or First Grader looking for a fun reading activity!

Treasure Chest Beginning Blends Match

Prepping this beginning blends activity took hardly any time at all, and the best part is I can easily save the game to play again from year to year. Prep it once and that’s it!

I printed out the beginning blends treasure chests and the picture coins, laminated them, and then cut them out. I decided to not cut around the coins fully, but to cut on the square lines, because I find that it’s easier for my kids to grasp them this way.

There are 18 treasure chests and 18 coins in all, focusing on beginning l, r, and s blends.

Each coin only matches to one treasure chest, so you could also choose to make this game self-correcting by writing the beginning blend on the back of each coin (for kids to check their work after they match them).

I played this activity in a small group, and we decided to tackle all of the coins and treasure chests at once, but you may decide to target specific blend sounds or do fewer at a time depending on your kids.

We spread out the treasure chest cards on the table and took turns picking a coin out of a container, saying the name of the object, and stressing its beginning sounds.

“frog…./FR/o/g/.”  When we could hear the beginning blend, we would talk about what letters we should be searching for, and then hunt for them on the treasure chests.

When we found the match, we placed the picture coin on the chest to show that they had been paired. We kept playing until all of the beginning blends had been matched!
