Mastering letters and letter sounds is not an easy task! We work hard on both the sounds letters make on their own and the sounds they make when blended together. This free Treasure Chest Beginning Blends Matching Game is the perfect activity for any pirate fan, treasure seeker, or just your average Kindergartener or 1st grader ready for a fun literacy activity!

Treasure Chest Beginning Blends Matching Game
This game is great for playing in small groups, using as an independent activity, or adding to your literacy centers!
It includes 18 treasure chest beginning blends cards and 18 picture coins focusing on l, r, and s blends.
How to Prep
Prepping this beginning blends activity takes hardly any time at all. And the best part is if I laminate the pieces, I can easily save the game to play again from year to year. Prep it once and that’s it!
To begin, I printed out the beginning blends treasure chests and the picture coins on cardstock, laminated them, and then cut them out. I decided to not cut around the coins fully, but to simply cut on the square lines. This makes quicker prep for me PLUS I find that it makes the coins easier for my kids to grasp.
Each coin only matches one treasure chest, so you could also choose to make this game self-correcting by writing the beginning blend on the back of each coin. This allows students to check their work after they make a match.
How to Play
We first played this activity in a small group, and we decided to tackle all of the coins and treasure chests at once, but you may decide to target specific blend sounds or do fewer at a time depending on your kids.
We spread out the treasure chest cards on the table and took turns picking a coin out of a small basket, saying the name of the picture, and stressing its beginning blend sound.
For example, for one picture coin, we said, “spoon… /SP/oo/n/.” When we heard the beginning blend, we talked about what letters we should be searching for, and then we hunted for them on the treasure chests.
When we found the match, we placed the picture coin on the chest to show that they had been paired.
We kept playing until all of the beginning blends had been matched!
Your kids are sure to love practicing beginning blends with this super fun literacy activity!
