Here is a colorful spelling activity you just have to try out: sticky rainbow spelling words! The colors and the “sticky” part are pleasing the senses while the learners practice spelling in a fun way!
What you need:
- Rainbow colors foam letters (not exact as these aren’t online, but bath letters will work!)
- Rainbow colors containers (optional but makes sorting easier!)
- a mirror
- little bit of water
Sticky Rainbow Spelling Activity
Sort the letters into the corresponding color container (your learners might like to help you with this step).
*If you don’t have rainbow bins, just line the bottom of a regular plastic shoe bin with laminated colored construction paper for the kids to sort the letters into!
Add a little bit of water to each container, about a quarter full. Place the containers in the order of the rainbow, if possible, in front of the mirror.
This setup is not perfectly “rainbow” since we are missing yellow (our set of containers did not have a yellow) and we used the pink and purple together.
Aso, if you do not have a mirror, you can use contact paper against a board (without the water).
You can provide the words using laminated cards if you want the learners to practice certain spelling words.
Or, they can try and spell as many words as they can. Encourage them to use all the colors, and to make it more challenging you could say it must be in rainbow order (if you have enough letters of each color).
Dipping the letters and sticking it to the mirror requires technique and would be suitable for older preschoolers, kindergarteners, and first graders.
A super fun, multi-sensory way to practice spelling – and so colorful too!
