They say all good things must come to an end, and I’m sad to say that’s true for our kindergarten letter craft series. But what better way to end this series than with a Rainbow Z is for Zebra Letter Z craft.

To end our kindergarten letter craft series, we wanted our letter Z craft to be Z is for Zebra, with a colorful rainbow twist!

This was a fun craft for the kids and me to make together but I’ll be completely honest – by letting the kids do the tape placement themselves and choose whichever colors they wanted to paint with, our zebras look more like stained glass windows than the black and white striped animal. (But I wouldn’t have it any other way!)

This was most of my kids’ first experiment with resist painting and it was such an easy art experiment, I definitely think we’ll be doing them again!

Making our Letter Z Craft – Z is for Zebra

First, gather your materials:

  • White cardstock or watercolor paper
  • Watercolors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Water glasses
  • Paper towels or rags
  • Transparent tape
  • Scissors
  • Googly eyes, optional
  • Glue sticks, optional

Using the scissors, prepare an uppercase and lower case “Z” for each child.

Provide the children with the letters, watercolors, paintbrushes, water glasses, paper towels, and tape to begin. It’s always a good idea to review how to use watercolors just before you begin for the best results.

Have the kids mark off stripes (or sections) on their “zebras” with the tape.

Next, have the children paint their zebras however they’d like – there’s no need to stick to just black and white zebras! Why not a rainbow zebra?

Allow the paint to dry fully before removing the tape to reveal their designs.

I had planned on having the kids add googly eyes to their zebras after they dried, but this was our last letter craft and the kids were more excited to move onto making our letter craft books than adding eyes to their final craft. I actually think this zebra letter crafts look great without the eyes, so do what you think works best for your time frames and group.
