We’re getting close to the end of our series of Kindergarten Letter Crafts so we’re going out with a bang – stepping up our craft levels as the kids are now in the habit of making these crafts weekly (and even my non-crafters are really looking forward to having a beautiful and complete alphabet series).

There are a couple fun options for the letter X, but with my rainbow-loving crew we definitely had to do X is for Xylophone with some cute rainbow bars.

While this craft is simple and straightforward, it still took the same amount of time for the kids to complete because it involved a bit of thought and creative planning for them to execute.

I purposely chose xylophone instead of the other popular “Letter X Craft” X-ray because I wanted to use a word that actually uses the letter sound for “x” – which X-ray does not (and it doesn’t even stand for a cool word that uses the letter x!)

Letter X Craft – X is for Xylophone

To begin, gather your materials:

  • Black construction paper or cardstock
  • Rainbow construction paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors (for the parent or teacher)

Using the scissors, prepare the shapes needed for making your xylophone letter craft – each child will need:

  • 1 letter X
  • Small strips of paper in each color – I trimmed them so as to not overlap the edges of the X

Provide the children with the necessary shapes and glue sticks to assemble their xylophones.

After R is for rainbow, my kids are getting really good at remembering the order of the rainbow – which is impressive considering they can’t “cheat” by remembering “ROY G BIV.”

They simply used their glue sticks to attach their rainbow bars to the underside of the X shapes. The focus is on placement (so the bars can be seen from the front of the craft) and placing the colors in the correct rainbow order.

Having an example craft is a good idea to allow children to check their work.

Our X is for Xylophone Letter X Craft turned out super cute and I liked that the upper and lowercase versions of the letter required the same preparation and materials.

Be sure to check out some of our other Kindergarten Letter Crafts, such as letter L is for lollipop or I is for ice cream.

Also, I have a fun water xylophone kitchen science experiment that would be a great follow-up activity.
