As part of our phonics curriculum, we like to make letter crafts that go beyond representation – incorporating movement and different sensory sensations. To learn “B” (/b/) we had a fun bubble-filled day with our B is for Bubble Letter B Craft.

We first made bubble paint a year ago as part of our “7 Ways to Play with Straws” brainstorm, and I’ve been meaning to do it again because it was such a hit!

This is a great oral motor activity and is great for building focus and breath control.

How to Make Bubble Paint

In a shallow bowl, mix:

  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon dish soap
  • A couple of drops of paint or food coloring

Food coloring was easier for the kids to manipulate than the paint – the purple paint seen below was made with food coloring while the blue was made with paint.

Making the Letter B Craft

You can do this a couple of different ways — you can place the bowl on a piece of paper and allow the bubbles to cascade over onto the paper to make the art, or you can have your child blow bubbles and then place a sheet of paper overtop of the bowl to touch the bubbles.

Have children work on blowing paint bubbles for a couple minutes to create some pretty patterns and impressions on their paper.

The children who just did one big bubble blow ended up having very faint coloring on their paper, which wasn’t as bold as the color left by the children who spend a few minutes on this activity.

This is a great activity for the classroom because you can call up a couple children at a time and do this with them without it being too time consuming.

Once the bubbles have disappeared and the paper has dried, cut the paper into letter b shapes.
