Fish Short Vowel Activity
Early readers learn that a word needs to have a vowel to be a real word plus identifying the vowel aids in decoding words when the words get longer.
BUT, young students sometimes get confused with which letters are vowels and which are consonants.
TIP: The easiest way to help them remember is to use visual cues- always make the vowels red and the consonants blue/black with your flashcard words. You can use a highlighter too!
Use activities like this fish short vowel center to look for the vowels in the middle. For some, it is easier to see the vowel than to hear the vowel, especially if it is a medial sound.
But, with practice, both skills can develop when the learning is made fun!
When you are ready to revise, or to reinforce, use these fish vowel printables.
Find the fish that has the same vowels and color it the correct color according to the instructions at the top of the page!

This vowel activity requires no prep, simply print and use!
I have included a black and white version too if you do not have a color printer.
Let the students color the instructions first and then carry on with finding the words to color those colors. This is also a great way for a teacher to assess her students vowel knowledge as well.
Extending the activity
Draw large fish on pieces of papers using the same colors as the vowel fish printable. Let the students think of their own words with those vowels and write it on the fish. See if they can fill each fish with words!
