Fish Short Vowel Activity

In Pre-K and Kindergarten, we teach early readers that a word needs to have a vowel to be a real word. Students being able to identify the vowel in words aids in decoding when the words get longer.

But young students sometimes get confused about which letters are vowels and which are consonants. The easiest way to help them remember is to use visual cues with color coding. We underline the vowels in words in red and the consonants in blue. You can use a highlighter to identify the vowel too!

We also use activities like these fish short vowel printables to look for the vowels in the middle of words. For some, it is easier to see the vowel than to hear the vowel, especially if it is a medial sound. But with practice, both skills can develop when the learning is made fun!

We like to use fun coloring tools like colored pencils to make this activity even more engaging!

How to Use the Printables

This short vowel activity requires no prep, simply print and use! I have also included a black and white version if you do not have a color printer.

The point of this activity is to identify the vowel in each fish word and color it the correct color according to the instructions at the top of the page.

We like to use fun coloring tools like markers or colored pencils to make this activity even more engaging!

If using the black and white printables, help the students color the letters in the color code instructions first. Then they can complete the activity independently, coloring the fish according to their vowels.

Students will color the fish using the vowel color code at the top of the page.

Extending the Activity

Draw large fish on pieces of paper using the same colors as the vowel fish printable. Let the students think of their own words with those vowels and write them on the fish. See if they can fill each fish with words!
