Farm Syllable Sort Activity
Breaking words into smaller chunks makes it easier to read, write, and spell words. Students will have fun “baling hay” as they count syllables and sort picture cards into the corresponding hay wagon!
Setting Up the Activity
Start by printing and laminating the tractor, wagon, and hay bale picture cards.
If you have them available, you can connect the tractor and wagon with plastic links or brads or use the cards as is and just lay them on the table.
Next, you will mix up the hay bale cards and spread them out on the table or add them to a small basket.
How to Use This Activity
Students will pick a hale bale from the “field” and identify the picture on the card. They will then identify the number of syllables in the word.
Once they have identified the number of syllables in the word, they will add it to the correct wagon.
Students will continue sorting hay bales until all bales of hay have been sorted into the correct wagons.
Engaging Ways to Help Identify Syllables In Words
For young learners, identifying syllables in words can be a difficult task to comprehend and master. Providing engaging hands-on and kinesthetic opportunities for students to practice chunking words is key to counting syllables. Here is a list of some of our favorite ways to practice counting syllables:
- Clap it out. Say the word slowly while you clap the syllables in the word.
- Pat it out. Say the word slowly while you pat the syllables in the word on the floor or your lap.
- Hop it out. Say the word slowly while you hop out the syllables in the word like a bunny.
- Use manipulatives. Use a thematic manipulative like farm animal counters or bunny erasers and pick one up for each syllable you count in the word.
