Letter F Craft – F is for Fish

My kids are loving our kindergarten letter crafts series and today we’re sharing a letter F craft – F is for Fish – an easy letter craft that involves a classic kindergarten art technique – vegetable stamping!
Who doesn’t remember potato or apple stamping as a kid? It’s a fun way to use found objects in the home to make art – a really integral concept in
If your area discourages food use in crafts or sensory play, you can easily replicate that fish scale shape with half of a cardboard tube or other tube cut in half.
Using “found objects” (or items use primary use is different than what you are using it for) is a great way for kids to explore and challenge functional fixedness – which is essentially building the skill of being able to look an object and imagine different uses for it rather than its intended use.
So, with this activity we can explore the idea “what is a paintbrush?” And, “what can be used to make unique prints?”
Making the Letter F – F is for Fish Craft
First, gather your materials:
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Googly eyes
- Glue sticks
- Scissors (for the teacher/parent)
- Paint
- 5″ pieces of celery
Using the scissors, cut a letter “F” or “f” for each child.
Provide the children with their letter shape, googly eyes, and glue sticks – but wait to show them how to use the celery and paint. (My kids probably thought I was going insane bringing celery instead of paintbrushes to the craft table.)
Show the kids how to dip the celery in the paint and gently shake or let any excess paint drip off.
Then, slowly and with purpose, show them how to stamp the paint onto their “fish” in order to make “fish scales” before encouraging them to give it a try themselves.
This is a great activity for developing muscle control and practicing holding a “writing utensil” – even if that writing utensil is a stick of celery!
The kids have to be very controlled in creating their patterns, dipping their celery into the paint and carefully making the print and lifting the celery straight up so as to make a clear print.
Our F is for Fish Letter F Craft blew my kids’ minds – and quickly they developed a fascination for vegetables and what other shapes we could make with our veggies. (I bartered that they would have to also snack on some of the same veggies beforehand.)
