We had our first taste of spring here this week. I volunteered at my kids’ school today, and the children’s energy level was super high. I always had to work extra hard to come up with engaging activities when the weather got nice, or, of course, around holidays. It was always worth the extra bit of effort. This cute and free Chick and Egg Letter Matching Activity is an engaging literacy activity for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners!
*Pair this with Spring Centers and Activities for Pre-K/Kindergarten!
Chick and Egg Letter Matching
These Chick and Egg Puzzles are an engaging way to work in some uppercase letter to lowercase letter matching practice.
You can liven this up further by hiding the chicks inside of plastic eggs for the kids to open up.
Put the eggs around the room to find, or just pre-fill a basket for them to go through.
Lay the “egg” cards out on a table for them to match to the chick cards. Once they burn off some of their energy, they can sit down and fill in the recording sheet.
This activity makes a great literacy center or small group activity. Just print and laminate the Chick and Egg Cards so that you can use them over and over.
Then, make enough copies of the recording sheet for each child.
The recording sheets have room to write nine letter pairs. I think that’ll be enough for many students, but if you have extra busy little bees, you may want to copy them double-sided.
Also, you may like to provide crayons or markers as well, to color the chicks on the recording sheet.

If you play in a small group, you can talk about each letter sound as they match the uppercase and lowercase.
Once the kids can match the letters independently, this can go in a literacy center. If you’re brave, you could even do this as a whole class activity!
