Beach Vocabulary Memory Game

We are going to the beach and I am taking my flip flops, Sarah is taking her dog, and James is taking his surf board! This printable vocabulary game is perfect for road trips to the beach or literacy centers in the classroom. However you choose to use this Beach Vocabulary Memory Game, it’s sure to be a hit. Simply print and cut the cards and you’re ready to play!

This activity includes 18 colorful beach-themed picture cards. I like to put the cards in a photo storage box and keep them in the car. This makes it easy to pull out during travel times. I also use this in the classroom for a quick 10 minute filler game!

I recommend laminating the vocabulary cards so they’ll be more durable to take on a road trip or use in your classroom centers, but this is optional.

How to Use this Game

To begin, I introduce the vocabulary memory game by having a discussion around the pictures. We take time to explore the meaning of the words – a vocabulary lesson in itself. Once the kids are comfortable with the meaning of each picture card, then each player pulls a card from the pile.

The phrase we repeat for this game is, “We are going to the beach, and I am taking ____ with me.” Each player repeats this phrase with their item and all those who go after them.

The player who memorizes all the items from each person, in the correct order, is the winner!

This activity develops auditory memory skills as the kids try to remember what the previous items were without the visual clues.

Teacher Tip: Early learners may find it helpful to see the cards laid out while saying the sentence: “We are going to the beach and I am taking… he is taking… she is taking…”

More Ways to Play

  • Traditional Memory – Print two sets and play a traditional memory game. Scatter the cards face down and have players take turns trying to find a match.
  • Beach Vocabulary Guessing Game – One player picks up a card and explains the picture without saying the word while other players try to guess the beach-themed picture they are describing. For example, a student might say, “Something that goes on your head to protect you from the sun.”
