Winter is in the air, and while we know that penguins aren’t around only in the winter, the colder weather lends itself perfectly to adding some fun penguin-themed activities to our learning, like this free printable Penguin Alphabet Match. It’s sure to add tons of fun to your winter literacy centers!

Penguin Alphabet Match

These penguins are hungry! The goal of this alphabet matching game is to help the uppercase penguins “catch” the lowercase fish, and in turn, give kids practice with identifying and naming their letters.

To prep, I first printed out the cards and then laminated them to keep them sturdy. Then I cut them apart and they were ready to use in my small groups.

How to Play

Depending on your students, when playing this Penguin Alphabet Match you may or may not use all 26 letters at once. This time of year, most of my kids are ready for the entire alphabet, so the first thing we do is sort our penguins in order from A-Z.

This is great work on our alphabetical order skills and keeps us organized for the next part of the activity.

After the penguins are in order, each student takes a turn “going fishing” and picking a random fish card. They say the name of the lowercase letter and then find the matching uppercase penguin.

If we already have the penguins in alphabetical order, this keeps some order to the game and gives the students a strategy when searching for their matches.

We continue the alphabet matching game by picking lowercase fish and matching them up to the uppercase penguins until all the letters have been paired up!

More Ways to Play the Alphabet Match:

• Use a basket or grab bag to make it a “Grab and Match” activity.
• “Hide and Seek” with a partner. Partner #1 hides the uppercase letters around the classroom and partner #2 holds the lowercase letters and has to find their match. Partners take turns hiding and seeking letters.
• Play it as a traditional game of Memory.
