As part of our phonics curriculum, we are making a series of fun letter crafts to help get kids excited about learning their letters. To learn “R” (/r/) we made this mixed media Letter R Craft – R is for Rose.
Pair this with our alphabet pack of games and activities for even more ABC fun!
As part of a long-term project, we’ve been making a giant castle out of a refrigerator box. My girls are a little bit obsessed with all things Disney and insisted on making some roses to surround our castle, so I saw it as a great opportunity to make a new letter craft.
We used a variety of materials for the kids to interact with and use to create different textures and understandings of their rose crafts.
Incorporating different sensory sensations into your crafts is a great way to engage children’s senses and facilitate deep semantic learning.
Making the Letter R Craft
Present these or other fun materials on a table or tray for an open-ended crafting experience:
- Paper plates
- Tissue paper
- Glue (I put the glue in a small paint bowl and added paint brushes)
I kept the green card stock for the letter “stems” separate, but you can present them at the same time.
Encourage your kids to use the materials however they’d like to imply a rose.
Some children swirled the yarn to make spirals, some implied petals with the tissue paper, and some went a little crazy with the glitter. (Okay that was my daughter!)
After the roses have dried, invite each child back to create a letter “R” out of their rose with the addition of some green stems.
Encourage the children to plan their work, laying out the stems and rose head to make a letter R – showing an example if necessary.
Glue the stems together, and then glue to the back of the rose to form an implied letter R.
Let your rose craft dry completely before displaying on the wall or attaching to your castle!
