Fine Motor Literacy Sight Word Activity

My daughter was recently reluctant to study her sight words because it was simply, “boring.” I knew that I could come up with a literacy activity to make it fun and more worthwhile than just studying sight word flashcards. That’s when my idea for this fine motor literacy sight word activity was born!

I opened up my drawer full of die cuts and grabbed over-sized die cuts in the shape of a butterfly to go with the season of spring. Depending on the time of year for you, you can choose what works for your kiddos and classroom! I also selected a variety of small crafting supplies and plastic toy tweezers for this activity.

Depending on the literacy needs of your students, you can focus on sight words, high frequency words, spelling or vocabulary words. I printed a list that my daughter was working on and I wrote one word per butterfly die cut in black sharpie marker.

I then gave her a selection of crafting supplies so she could use them to “cover up” each letter in the words. She was expected to read each letter and word out loud for practice. To work those fine motor skills extra hard, I gave her a pair of plastic tweezers to pick up each manipulative with.

Extra tips:

You might consider laminating the die cuts after you have written the words on them. You could then give your students dry erase markers so they can practice tracing the letters as they say them and read the word out loud.
