One of my favorite ways to get children engaged in early literacy is by having them participate in ABC activities on a daily basis. These ABC popsicle stick puzzles are a simple activity that support letter identification in early learners.  Not only are they fun and engaging… they are easy to create and frugal!  Who doesn’t like that?

Early literacy skills can be built in many ways.  We start out by introducing children to picture books, phonemic awareness, ABC activities, and more, with the ultimate goal of seeing children emerge into reading on their own.

ABC Popsicle Stick Puzzles are sure to be a hit with the children in your life.  With just a few thrifty supplies, you’ll be glad you did it!

Supplies:

  • Plastic Disposable Cups
  • Markers/Sharpies – We used Crayola Power Lines
  • Jumbo Craft Sticks (or popsicle sticks)

Create the Activity:

Lay 6 jumbo craft sticks in a straight line.  Tip:  I placed a kitchen hot pad underneath so there wasn’t a lot of shifting of the craft sticks.

Using a colorful marker or sharpie, write one letter of the alphabet across the 6 jumbo craft sticks.

Repeat until all letters have been finished.  Place each letter set inside a plastic cup with the corresponding letter written in sharpie marker on the outside of the cup.

I just LOVE how this allows kids to practice their ABC’s while doing a beloved activity…puzzles!  When children are invited to explore the alphabet in a way that is fun and engaging it’s a win, win for sure.
